Ann Hui’s Love After Love will play out of competition at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. It is an adaptation of an Eileen Chang short story, set in Hong Kong shortly before the Second World War. Sandra Ma (Soulmate) plays a young girl who falls into her aunt’s game of luring rich men, with Eddie Peng (Our Time Will Come) co-starring.
Ann Hui’s Our Time Will Come portrays a chapter in the history of Hong Kong’s wartime-era. In 1941, at the height of the Pacific War, Japanese forces took Hong Kong and unleashed offensive against cultural figures. The anti-Japanese Dongjiang guerilla unit is tasked with rescuing the cultural figures from the besieged city.

(15 Apr 2018) ANN HUI'S 'OUR TIME WILL COME' WINS BIG AT THIS YEAR'S HONG KONG FILM AWARDS Hong Kong female director Ann Hui's 'Our Time Will Come' wins big at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards. The period drama movie came into Sunday's awards ceremony with 11 nominations, and took home 5 awards. They included Best Film, Best Director nod for Ann Hui, Best Supporting Actress for Hui's longtime collaborator, actress Deanie Ip, Best Art Direction and Best Original Film Score. Sunday night's win is the 6th Best Director win for Hui, who previously won the honor for 'A Simple Life', 'The Golden Era', 'The Way We Were'…etc. 'Paradox', a cop thriller, starring Louis Koo as a policeman who travels to Thailand to look for his missing daughter, walked away with 3 awards including Best Action Choreography, Best Sound Design and Best Actor for Koo. This is the first Best Actor win for the 47 year old actor, who was visibly emotion on stage when he collected his award. Backstage, Koo said that he hopes that his win will inspires others to persevere in doing whatever it is that they are passionate about. "I don't know what else to say for winning this award. I kept going after all these years. So many people said to me tonight, 'you should win this award'. However, in this world, there is no such thing as 'should'. You just have to work hard. Other than hard work, there are other factors as well, but you should never give up on yourself. After all these years, I stood at my post. Tonight… I don't know, Philip Keung (Shock Wave) won, I was so happy. Ling Man Lung (Tomorrow is Another Day) won, I was so so happy as well. As a new actor, he was brilliant. He knew what he was doing. Keung is the same. He's been in this business for so long. He's always insisted on making films. I'm the same way. I didn't say this much on stage. I said a lot already. What else I wanted to say is, I'm so happy. Thank you to my family. If it wasn't for my family, I wouldn't win this award. If it wasn't for my manager, I wouldn't win this award. Thank you." It is also a first Best Actress win for Teresa Mo. Mo's portrayal of a heartbroken mother to an autistic boy in 'Tomorrow is Another Day' beat out stiff competition in her category. The 58-year-old actress said that when her named was announced, she nearly had a heart attack "I was really afraid that that I was going to have an heart attack. My heart was pumping so loud. That would be horrible if I win an award but got sick. I was so nervous. I saw my headshot in the monitor and then I didn't dare to look at it again. I didn't know how I was going to react if I lost. I didn't dare to look at myself. When I heard my name, wow, the first thought that came to my head was, 'Thank you God'…I'm so happy. I know who voted for me, who supported me. I thank everyone who voted for me." 🤍 Following a spate of murders, suicides and coupled by unemployment, the isolated town of Tin Shui Wai in the northern New Territories has been dubbed as the "City of Sadness". This has been the background of director Ann Hui On-wah's most recent two films 'The Way We Are' and 'Night and Fog'. It was a surprising success for The Way We Are at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards and earned Hui the Best Director award. It also won Best Actress (Paw Hee-Ching), Screenplay (Lou Shiu-wa) and Best Supporting Actress (Chan Lai-wun). While Night and Fog is set to similar circumstances to its predecessor, it is not a sequel but rather a complementary follow-up to create a diptych of Tin Shui Wai. It stars Simon Yam Tat-wah (任達華) and mainland actress Zhang Jingchu (張靜初). In this video, film editor Clarence Tsui speaks to Hui prior to the Film Awards.

In March, the documentary "Keep Rolling" was released in Hong Kong, showing the little-known side of the female director. Ann Hui introduces her powerful new film A SIMPLE LIFE, BUT thanks to a TIFF fuck-up in which they started screening Johnnie To's LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE for about 20 seconds before shutting everything down Hui's film was SO delayed that the Q&A, such as it was, turned into a tiny meet 'n greet in the lobby. Hui was gracious, but the noise in the lobby made a formal Q&A impossible. Thanks TIFF. :( I can only hope Hui shows up to the second screening for a Q&A and someone is kind enough to record it
Q&A with Legendary filmmaker Ann Hui. She will be the recipient of the Variety Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award. One of the most critically acclaimed Hong Kong New Wave filmmakers for four decades, Hui has created work of great sensitivity, focusing on themes of cultural displacement, family conflict, and female perspectives.
